There are many different kinds of construction jobs, and construction workers are a valuable part of our society. From building commercial buildings, residential structures, and even remodeling existing buildings, they are play an important role in our daily lives. If you are interested in jobs in this field, then here are some tips to help you get started.

Most people who are just starting out in this business usually come right out of high school, and start pretty much at the bottom of the ladder, as laborers. They work under more experienced people, and do the grunt work. This means hefting heavy objects, cleaning and even digging ditches and things like that. While this can be hard work, and very tedious at times, if you really want to get the right experience in all aspects of construction, this is the way to start.

There are many aspects of construction that are specialized and having additional education can help. There are two different ways to become specialists, like carpenters, roofers and even brick layers, just to name a few. One of these ways is to get formal training from a trade or technical school. Here they learn the basic and some advanced techniques. Even with this education, in some cases, they are still laborers in whatever field they have chosen, in order to prove that they have what it takes to advance up the ladder.

Another way to get experience is by doing apprenticeships. Even some who have taken courses in trade and technical schools also do apprenticeships, because this is where you get hands on experience in the field, learning from experts. These training programs can last from three to five years, and you receive a certificate at the end, allowing you to find your own work with other companies, or to advance to higher levels, maybe even helping to train others in the field.

Some construction fields require specialized licenses, like plumbers, heavy equipment operators, and electricians. For these kinds of jobs you need to get more specialized training and education, and must be able to pass tests in order to get certified. Even if you start out as an apprentice and have experience working with a company, you will still need to get licensed eventually.

While a college degree is helpful if you are looking for management jobs in construction, the more experience you have, the more likely you can advance without a degree. The highest management positions may still require you to get a degree, and if you want to go directly into an assistant or trainee for construction management, you really need one.

With the job market in the field of construction growing by leaps and bounds, employment opportunities are abundant. If you really want to enter a field that is just starting to grow, and has much potential for future achievement, you should really try to get into the field of alternative power. There are many different opportunities in the field of solar power system construction, and more courses and training opportunities are arising every day. Large solar arrays, and wind turbine farms for power plants are becoming more prominent, and workers are needed to build these systems. The opportunities for advancement in these fields is virtually unlimited.

Getting a good job means being able to prove to the bosses that you are the right candidate for the job. How do you go about this? By writing a well-thought out resume and cover letter. The resume is your key to that job as it is the summary that shows you are as a professional and what you can do to contribute to the company. Without a resume, you’ll just be discarded from the pool of possible candidates for the job. Without a really eye-catching and interesting resume, you’ll still be discarded from that pool as uninteresting, typical, and plain boring.

So how do you write a good resume to nab that amazing job? It will take a lot of practice and peer evaluation but the results will certainly be worth it. Here are some helpful tips on how to write a resume that will scream, “I am the candidate!” like never before:

Sit down and start listing down your skills, experiences, and everything else that you believe would make you a valuable candidate for the job. Note down your strengths, your weaknesses, what is unique to you, what kinds of applications you are good at, and the rest is up to you.

Arrange this list in order and provide detailed yet brief descriptions of every skill and every project you have done in the past that showcases that skill.

Provide basic information such as your personal details, contact numbers, e-mail addresses, and the like and format it in such a way that it is easy to read and won’t bore the HR managers at the first glance. Remember that your resume should stand out among the thousands of resumes sent to the company inbox every day.

Use bullets if you have a lot of information and would like to list them down in a more organized manner. It will definitely help your bosses as they will probably be tired and extremely bored from reading one resume after another. Highlight important details like achievements, awards, and forms of recognition.

If you aren’t sure about your resume, ask a friend or an expert to view it and provide feedback. Though you may get occasional negative points from them, it will allow you to improve your resume that it will totally catch your future boss’s attention completely.

Once you have drafted your resume, don’t hesitate to revise and revise until it is totally perfect for both you and for others as well. Don’t forget to include a well-rounded cover letter indicating why you are a good fit for the job as well as details that will prove your qualifications and capabilities. These things may be tedious and tiring, but you will realize how valuable they are when you’re sitting down waiting for your turn inside the interview room.

The interview process is the second phase wherein you are just a step away from landing that job. It is probably the most crucial part of the job hunting process since you are now being evaluated by either the boss of the company, the construction company chief, or the HR manager. Your resume did the trick in landing you a spot on the list of candidates, now it is your turn to impress the people behind the desk by doing a good job at the interview. Though it is just a matter of answering questions, it can be a very scary and overwhelming experience for anyone since it is going to be your first and only chance to make a good first impression. Once you blow that chance, it’s never going to come back ever again.

So when preparing for the interview, it is important to consider these few things as they will more or less boost your chances of landing that dream job. You may or may not apply these tips, but if you do and you succeed, you’ll be glad that you at least took the time to think and apply them to your approach. You will also realize that by following these tips, you have impressed the HR manager and the bosses unlike the rest of the applicants who were interviewed as well. So without further ado, here are a few things to think about when interviewing for a job:

The history and the background information about the company. Without knowledge of who you are working for and what company you are representing, your chances of landing that job will definitely go down the drain in a matter of seconds. Take some time to do research on the company history, who runs it, and what they do before driving to the building itself.

Your answers to the many questions to be asked of you. They might be personal, about your work history, your educational background, items in your resume, and the like. Try practicing in your head your answers to typical questions you know will be asked during the interview so that you won’t be so nervous when the interviewer asks you about the different aspects of yourself as a professional.

If you are willing to adjust and make changes for this job. If you have driven miles and for hours for this interview, are you ready and willing to move and transfer your entire family in order to be near enough to get to where your new office is? Are you willing to drive for hours every day for five times a week for this job? These questions may also be asked during the interview process so think about this very well.

Lastly, think about how far you see yourself working for this company.

Construction worker jobs are some of the toughest and at times most hazardous a person can take on. First and foremost it requires physical strength and power to be able to handle all kinds of materials like cement, boulders, and paint as well as harmful chemicals when working on a construction site. What’s more, you as a construction worker are tasked to work in all sorts of environments such as in tunnels underground or at great heights. But despite all this, construction workers are some of the most needed individuals in the workforce as they are the people in charge of maintaining and building structures around the city. It is them you should go to if you need work such as demolition, repair, and construction of new and more improved infrastructure to be done. Construction workers are also expected to have a set of skills and abilities that make them fit for the job, so if you’re planning on building a career as a construction worker, here are some of the skills that you need to develop and acquire.

Whether you decide to work as a general construction worker or a specialized one, a construction worker is required to possess various skills needed for the job. Usually construction workers are trained on the spot so that they will gain firsthand experience on what needs to be done and how to operate the equipment and heavy machinery to be used to do the job. Most companies would also require employees to have at least a high school diploma or the equivalent. Construction workers who attended classes in English, mechanical drawing, welding, physics, and the like are usually preferred by companies during recruitment.

For those who are starting out as construction workers would usually assist the more experienced ones by cleaning and preparing the worksite. They are also tasked to unload heavy materials like cemebt bags and hollow blocks, so physical strength is needed at all times. Eventually, these entry-level workers get to do much more difficult tasks including operating some of the tools and equipment being used. If you wish to acquire training first before going into the worksite, there are also vocational schools that offer training and classes to develop skills needed in many construction worker jobs. They will be taught how to read blueprints, how to use tools and equipment properly, how to operate heavy machinery, and of course are taught basic and advanced safety and health procedures. This is especially important because once you start working in more dangerous worksites you will need to protect yourself from all kinds of chemicals and possible dangers.

Other skills include building and highway construction, hazardous waste remediation, skills for energy-efficient construction, and the like.

Construction worker jobs may not be as lucrative and fast-growing as internet marketing and self-employed businesses, but many companies are actually recruiting these construction workers while the latter are constantly looking for good paying construction jobs around the country as well as all over the world. These workers are in charge of the construction, maintenance, and development of highways, roads, buildings, and the like and they have to handle heavy machinery, harmful chemicals, dangerous work environments, and the like to be able to get the job done. Sadly, a lot of construction works are being laid off because of the financial crisis and many are unable to find another job with other companies.

Construction workers don’t really need a college degree to be able to work on site, but to be able to get accepted into a company you need to at least have a high school diploma or previous training in a vocational school. These training programs teach construction workers all kinds of skills necessary to do a good job in the construction site such as handling tools and using equipment properly, blueprint reading, carpentry, welding, and the like. Classes in English, physics, mechanical drawing, and mathematics are also important if you want a company to accept you into their team. Overall, experience as well as good physical strength and power are needed to work as a construction laborer so if you’re planning on building a career as one, these are what you should develop.

Construction workers earn hourly wages between $13.71 and $20 an hour. According to a study conducted on median hourly wages of construction workers in May 2008, the lowest percent earned is $8.67 per hour while the highest could reach up to $25.98 per hour. These wages differ based on the kind of construction being done such as non-residential building construction, residential construction, infrastructure development, and other types of construction. These earnings could increase or reduce depending on all kinds of factors such as poor weather, lay-offs, downturns, and the like. If you’re an apprentice or an entry-level worker who just started out in the field, you could earn up to 60% of the salaries being paid to experience full-time workers. Once you are able to learn and develop more complex skills, your hourly wage goes up.

It is important therefore to learn and develop the necessary skills in order to work efficiently as a construction worker. Thousands of workers have been laid off due to all kinds of factors, so in order to keep your position within a company you should be able to prove to your bosses that you are a valuable worker and that your skills are what they need for the business to grow.

The economy today is slowly recovering but in reality there are still thousands of people in need of jobs. A lot of employees lost their jobs because of the terrible financial crisis, leaving many struggling to pay their debts and to find new ways to support their families. Construction workers are especially in need of new jobs since many of the companies they have worked for had to let them go to cut down on costs. Fortunately, there are thousands of recruitment websites today making it easier for these construction workers to find jobs again. Companies all over the country as well as around the world are using these recruitment websites to hire potential construction workers to join their team and because of this, hundreds of construction worker jobs are now available to thousands of potential contractors, suppliers, and workers all over the country.

Construction worker jobs basically consist of work that demands a lot of physical energy. A construction worker basically is in charge of cleaning and preparing construction sites in order to make way for new buildings, highways, residential houses, and the like. Some of the tasks being assigned to a construction worker include erecting and disassembling old structures, cleaning out the debris around the area, loading very heavy materials such as bags of cement and hollow blocks, and of course building the new structure itself while maintaining order around the area, especially traffic control. To be accepted for a construction worker job, you need to at least have experience in the field, physical strength and endurance, and the will power to do the work. There are companies that offer to train new workers on the spot, but being able to take formal training through apprenticeship programs before applying for construction worker jobs offers more chances of getting accepted.

Construction worker jobs require most employees to work in extreme environments, usually outdoors around the highways and main roads. There are also jobs that require working underground or at great heights depending on what is being constructed. There is a lot of work that demands physical strength and power since it involves handling all kinds of materials from chemicals to dangerous machinery. But depending on the kind of specialization you’re into, you can specify in your resume what sector of construction you are best at. There are those who can work with all kinds of construction tasks, making them most flexible and sometimes more in-demand by companies. Whatever it is that you may be assigned to do, the most important thing that you should remember when working as a construction laborer is to always do things with caution and safety. All construction sites require workers to wear safety clothing including gloves, hardhats, goggles, and the like.
